ALBUQUERQUE – Business owners across Albuquerque got much-needed help recovering from acts of vandalism. The City of Albuquerque began the Window Grant program on September 1, 2024, providing financial assistance for the repair of broken windows caused by vandalism.
The program, which ended on December 31, 2024, supported 87 business owners, covering repairs for 210 broken windows. In total, the City has awarded or pledged $200,000 to help alleviate the financial burden of these damages.
“This was a great program,” he said Rosalinda Castaneda, owner of Wigs, Wigs, Wigs. “The funds came in really handy and I’m really grateful.”
A collaboration between the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) and the Department of Economic Development’s Office of Small Business, the initiative aimed to protect businesses and keep them open to the public. Participants expressed gratitude for the timely support of the program, many appreciated the funding to help them avoid further financial losses and maintain customer traffic.
“We will continue to find new ways to prevent crime and support those affected by it,” he said. Mayor Tim Keller. “Replacing these windows helps keep businesses open and helps ensure they have the resources they need to recover and continue to serve our community.”
The grant reimbursed up to 80% of window replacement or repair costs, up to a maximum of $5,000 per business. An additional $1,000 was available to those who included environmentally sustainable “green” glass or safety glass in their repairs.
Participating businesses were asked to complete APD’s Business Crime Prevention Security Survey. Meanwhile, APD’s Real-Time Crime Center continues to help track criminals using over 10,000 cameras across the city. Officers have also increased proactive patrols in areas with higher rates of vandalism.
